Iowa State University once again welcomed me with open arms – The Central Trend

The crisp air created the perfect atmosphere, and even the rain couldn’t dampen my enjoyment of the Iowa State campus. From the moment my Odyssey of the Mind team arrived, I was overwhelmed with a sense of warmth and belonging.

Create, share, and apply knowledge to make Iowa and the world a better place.

The trees were green and almost all surfaces were clean. From peaceful ponds to bustling brick buildings, everything seemed to fall into place. While this was my third visit to campus, this visit exceeded my preconceptions with the spacious Martin suites provided for my team. As for the college dorms, the rooms were quite large, but the icing on the cake was the stairs leading to a loft for each pair of rooms; there was an audible gasp as we entered the rooms.

With spontaneous workouts, a game of “Big Booty” and lots of foosball games, my team really enjoyed the common room as well. Dorms exceeding all expectations, I was once again greeted by the dining room. We have had our meals at the same location for every World Finals at the ISU, but the updates made for easy seating and a comfortable environment. The rear seating area appeared very modern, adapting the old circular tables to sensible rectangular tables.

Seen from the perspective of college food standards, I appreciate the selection offered by the ISU. For almost every meal there were five food stations with different options. The cleaning process has always been easy and every employee I’ve come in contact with has been surprisingly patient and helpful, despite the hundreds of little kids running around.

Speaking of the huge number of children, the Colosseum provided the perfect space to accommodate the hundreds of teams competing in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. Overall, the standard brick architecture created a modern yet rustic atmosphere when strolling around campus.

The campus was great for hanging out with friends and great fun for pin trading places.

I have to admit that the guest internet connection only worked dodgy, but it might be improved if one was a real student on campus. This problem wasn’t a big deal for me, but for others who didn’t have cellular data, it was pretty frustrating.

Lastly, transportation worked quite efficiently with designated maps outlining the various routes. There was one instance where the doors closed before some of my team members got out of the vehicle, but after chasing the bus for a few steps and flagging down the driver, the crisis was averted.

This on-campus experience definitely reinforced my desire to at least apply to Iowa State University. The atmosphere was so welcoming that several of my friends are now considering applying as well. As a top university and the most prestigious school in Iowa, the campus does not deserve to be overlooked.
