Outlander fans rally after disappointing news

Foreigner fans are in the arms after Caitriona Balfewho rose to fame playing time-traveling nurse Claire Randall on the hit series, had her chances of Oscar the success flew away on Tuesday.

The actress missed out on a nomination for her portrayal of Ma in by Kenneth Branagh autobiographical drama, Belfast – despite picking up every precursor leading up to this, including a BAFTA nods last week. She was a supposed shoo-in in the Best Supporting Actress category, but in the end, Academy voters chose to nominate the co-star. Judi Dench in the category instead.

The film also received a slew of nominations in several other major categories. Ciarán Hinds, who plays Pops in the film, was also nominated in the Supporting Actor category, while the film was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Sound, Original Screenplay and Original Song.

Taking to Twitter shortly after the nominations were revealed, one person wrote: “For me the biggest mystery and rebuff of the #OscarNoms was that Caitríona Balfe disappeared for Belfast. She brought such empathy and heart and gave hands down the film’s most memorable performances. She deserved it. What happened?

Another was equally puzzled, tweeting: “How don’t you propose Catriona Balfe for Belfast???? #OscarNoms”, while someone else said: “Happy for Dame Judy but disappointed Catriona Balfe’s good work has been overlookedD.”

A fourth added: “Guys she was so stunning to watch I researched everything she did before and became a fan overnight. #CaitríonaBalfe will be back for her #Oscar , she’s a star.”

Sir Kenneth has since expressed his disappointment with Caitríona. Speaking in a statement, he said: “We know it’s been a phenomenally competitive year. These are just a few wonderful movies out there, and inevitably there are some wonderful shows.

“What I know is for sure I wouldn’t have been nominated, of course, without the incredible work of Jamie Dornan, Caitríona Balfe and Jude Hill. It sounds cliché, but I mean when I say these nominations absolutely belong to them.
