Player selection becomes easy if Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid are on the same page:
Rajkumar Sharma, the childhood coach of Virat Kohli, thinks new India skipper Rohit Sharma is likely to get the players of his choice if India captain and head coach Rahul Dravid are on the same length of wave.
Rohit Sharma will lead the Indian team in the upcoming limited series against West Indies after recovering from a hamstring injury. The Mumbaikar is also the favorite to be named Team India’s test skipper.
Rajkumar Sharma: It becomes easy if Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid are on the same page
Rajkumar Sharma was asked if the Indian team chosen for the West Indies series suggests that Rohit Sharma had a say in the selection.
Rajkumar Sharma replied: “Every captain has their own choice and every captain wants to get the players they want and usually that also happens. It becomes easy if Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid are on the same page, if the captain and the coach want a particular team, the coaches feel it’s fair to give them that team and that should happen too and I think it will happen too.
Former top class cricketer Rajkumar Sharma has also been asked about the likelihood of Rohit Sharma also being handed the reins of Team India in the tests.
Rajkumar Sharma replied: “I don’t think there is a contender other than Rohit Sharma because there is no other player whose place is certain in all three formats. So I think he is the best choice and he made a great captain in the IPL and whenever he got a chance for Team India I expect him to take Team India to new heights.
KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravichandran Ashwin are some of the other candidates for Team India test captain position. Rohit Sharma, who has just been appointed captain of the white ball for the Indian team, was unable to take part in the recently concluded bilateral series against South Africa, in which the Men in Blue suffered a defeat humiliating. Due to a hamstring injury, Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of the South Africa tour.
The 3-0 ODI series thrashing in South Africa was a setback for Rahul Dravid, who was with the senior team on his first overseas coaching assignment. India will then host the West Indies for 3 ODIs and as many T20Is next month.
Reetinder Singh Sodhi opens up on challenges ahead for Rohit Sharma
Reetinder Singh Sodhi was asked about the challenges ahead for Rohit Sharma, especially as the team isn’t doing too well after being knocked out of the T20I World Cup 2021 in the group stage, then losing both the Test series and subsequent ODI series to the rather inexperienced Proteas.
He has answered: “It’s definitely a challenge when you’re managing the captaincy of such a great team. You come across adverse situations and conditions, the team isn’t doing so well, if we talk about our situation during the recent T20 World Cup.
The ex-Indian all-rounder hopes the team management has strategies in place for the upcoming multiple ICC events like the 2022 T20I World Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Reetinder Singh Sodhi observed: “Now the T20 World Cup, the 50+ World Cup, the World Test Championship – a lot of things are coming. So Rohit and Rahul Dravid would prepare a model or have already done so and it is extremely necessary because we have not done so well in the ICC championships.
Reetinder Singh Sodhi concluded by saying that Rohit Sharma could cement his place as skipper and enjoy an extended run if Team India succeeds in these world events.
