The Newcastle United Blog | Howe addresses balance in squad selection for Crystal Palace

Eddie Howe has kept shift changes to a minimum on the surge since early October. With a Carabao Cup clash against Crystal Palace tomorrow, a major rotation could be on the cards.

There were 10 substitutions for victory in the second round of this competition at Tranmere. The performance was scrappy and it took a second-half rally to pass the club out of League Two.

Tomorrow’s adversaries are much more formidable. The Eagles are on a roll after winning their last two matches to climb into the Premier League top 10.

Howe must perform the balancing act of introducing players to the team while maintaining continuity and momentum. With Chelsea just three days down the line, Howe is likely to make a number of changes.

Speaking at his press conference this morning, Howe touched on the potential need for squad rotation, saying:

“We have a lot of players who can’t wait to play and show their qualities.

“We have a tight deadline with three games in six days, so we will try to make the right call for the team while recognizing that we are desperate to improve.”

St. James’s Park is full tomorrow, giving Newcastle a great platform to progress. As Howe states, he is desperate to advance to the next round of this competition.

He added a reminder that while the league is very important, another aim is to bring silverware to Tyneside saying:

“League form is also very important to us, but in every competition we enter we want to give the best representation of ourselves.

“I said early on here that my dream was to try and win something for Newcastle and that hasn’t changed.”
